Must Watch YouTube: First We Feast’s “Hot Ones”

** links available for each of the episodes mentioned — click on the guest name to check them out **

“It’s The Show With Hot Questions and Even Hotter Wings”

is how host Sean Evans introduces the show every episode.

First We Feast’s Hot Ones is an intimate celebrity interviewing web series on YouTube. Actors, actresses, comedians, athletes, musicians, YouTubers, and more put their tastebuds to the test as they eat the hottest hot sauces in the world while answering hard-hitting questions from the show’s incredibly talented host Sean Evans about their careers and backgrounds. The web series gives fans a chance to see their favorite celebrities in a more natural habitat, which is eating wings and having a genuine conversation with a humble show host.

Impressive Guest Variety

Hot Ones features a wide variety of guests from the sports, film, YouTube, and music industries. The inclusivity and diversity of guests is extremely refreshing. The series is able to connect fans from all walks of life — from sports to video games and so much more — to the same quality interview content.

Because of Hot Ones, fans are exposed to guests they may not have otherwise been exposed to. In Season 7, the Hot Ones episode guests progress as follows: Episode 6 features E-40, Episode 7 features Lilly Singh, Episode 8 features Blake Griffin, Episode 9 features Bill Burr. In just 4 episodes, Hot Ones reached audiences from 4 different industries: rap, YouTube, sports, and comedy. And this isn’t unique to just Season 7. For all 9 Seasons of the show, featuring nearly 200 different guests, Hot Ones has managed to provide an impressive and inclusive guest lineup. Fans of Hot Ones and various industries are able to discover new stars while also further appreciating the stars they already know and follow.

The Show’s Host: Sean Evans

First of all, Hot Ones‘ host Sean Evans is arguably the best interviewer in the press business right now. Not only is Sean great at asking the right questions, but he also excels at making his guests feel comfortable in one of the most uncomfortable situations — eating ridiculously spicy hot wings.

To start this ode to Sean Evans off, here are some undeniable, incredible compliments Sean has received from guests on Hot Ones:

“For me to be able to wing this, have a wonderful sit-down conversation with [Sean] who obviously does a shit load of research was one of the most defining moments of my entire life.”

stone cold steve austin, S9E12

“A lot of people don’t understand that the reason I came here is because he…knows shit that nobody else knows. Sean Evans is the best fucking host on the internet.”

N.O.R.E, S2E43

“Holy shit I’m like where the fuck is the teleprompter? This guy is good. Dude, you’re an impressive talent. I’m impressed by you.”

steve-o, S4E03

Now I’ll do as Sean does so flawlessly does for his guests and deep dive into his particular craft. That is…how Sean manages to be the best interviewer in the press business right now.

Brilliant Questions

“Fuck, Sean…you’re brilliant.”

pete holmes, S7E10

Sean is constantly shocking guests with his brilliant, intensely researched questions that frequently leave them wondering how he even found the information in the first place. When Jay Pharoah was on the show for Season 2 Episode 27, Sean asked a question about meeting an ex-girlfriend on MySpace. Jay’s reaction:

“How the hell did you know that shit?!”

Jay Pharoah, S2E26

And it doesn’t end with Jay Pharoah. Even with upwards of almost 200 guest interviews so far on the show, Sean seems to stump the majority of the guests with his intensely researched questions and unique approach to interviewing. I’ll let some of these impressed, and sometimes astonished, guests speak for themselves:

“First of all, I applaud you for even knowing that…”

Dax shepard, S3E10

“This is great research. If more people did their research like you…these outbursts [during interviews] would be far and few between.”

wale, S4E17

“That’s a great thing that you found out about. I didn’t know that anyone knew about [that].”

Jack black, S7E02

Sometimes, Sean dives so deep for his questions that the celebrity had forgotten all about that particular experience or situation.

Wow, you guys have good questions, dude. I forgot about my own life.”

theo von, S8E09

“I forgot about that! Oh my God.”

scarlett johansson, S8E12

As someone who frequently watches celebrity press interviews across YouTube from various shows and channels (including late night talkshows, daytime morning shows, international film press tours), I tend to see the same rotating questions being asked to a particular celebrity. But not with Sean Evans. Sean not only keeps said celebrity on his/her/their toes, but he also allows fans to learn even more about their favorite celebrities and their particular crafts with fresh and innovative questioning. Celebrities are frequently impressed by Sean’s ability to ask questions they’ve never been asked in an interview before.

“Oh, shit. Nobody’s ever asked me anything like that before.”

logic, S4E21

“That’s cool, I don’t know if I’ve ever answered that question.”

adam devine, S9E06

Along with the actors, athletes, musicians, comedians, and content creators, Sean’s talent is so impeccable that he even shocks and impresses precedented, and even notorious, interviewers that come on the show. From Seth Myers and Lily Singh, who both host their respective late-night talk shows on television, to Chelsea Handler, who earned her infamous no-fucks-given reputation from retired her talk show, to Andy Cohen, who hosts both television and radio talk shows. Here is what they have to say about Sean:

“I’m gonna tip my hat to your research department. That’s a really deep cut right there.”

Seth Meyers, S8E03
The “research department” is, of course, Sean evans

“You know what? No one has ever asked me that question. And I need to give you props right now because that is such a good question.”

lily singh, S7E07

“Oh, wow. You really do your research…good for you. You take your job seriously.”

chelsea handler, S8E11

“Oh wow! What a good question…”

Andy Cohen, S3E19

Just to further prove my point (as if I even have to) and appreciate Sean’s talents, here are some more direct quotes from guests about Sean Evans:

“This is lovely. By the way, one of the best interview questions I’ve had in a long time.”

Ashton kutcher, S10E02

“You’re so great at this, dog. You’re really good at this, bro. Uh, I forgot what the questions was, I was enamored with you.”

Shia Labeouf, S10E01

“I think you’re an excellent interviewer, you don’t even need the hot sauce.”

Paul Rudd, S10E05

Guest Hospitality

Despite keeping guests on their toes with his shocking questions, he manages to keep his guests comfortable during the interview. On the surface, this task seems impossible. The whole concept of Hot Ones is daunting to guests because with every tough question, the corresponding wing gets hotter. Yet, Sean somehow manages to create a comfortable atmosphere for the guests. I think there are a few tricks to his trade…some obvious, and others not so much.

“You’re amazing at this, man. You did a great job today.”

chance the rapper, S10E10

Wing For Wing

In every interview, Sean matches the guest wing for wing. This is a small detail that I believe makes a big difference in the interview. If the guest cleans the wing, Sean cleans the wing. There were only a few occasions when Sean didn’t match the guest; and in each of these occasions, it is justified. For example, when Rachael Ray was on the show for Season 2 Episode 40, she began drinking spoonfuls of the hot sauce instead of eating the wings….this is just insane.

Having the interviewer endure the challenge with the interviewee leaves many of the guests surprised. Some guests have even swapped wings with Sean to prove that he is indeed handling the same doused wings as they are.

When guests who are unfamiliar with the show participate, many don’t even expect Sean to eat the wings with them so they’re appreciative when he does. When Margot Robbie was on the show, she stated:

“It’s very nice of you to do this with me, by the way, thank you.”

Margot robbie, S11E01

This may sound cheesy, but it seems like a bond even begins to form between Sean and the guests as they endure the wings together. Guests not only appreciate his hospitality, but respect his innovative questioning and hot wing-eating skills.

Sean’s Personality

Along with obvious tactics, like matching wing for wing, Sean’s most unnoticed hospitality tactics are his sympathetic demeanor and easygoing personality. None of Sean’s interviews feel forced. Each interview truly feels like a natural conversation between Sean and his guests. I would give an example for this, but it truly feels like every episode fits the profile of a conversation… and I’m not just saying that. This may seem like an easy task…but if it was easy, wouldn’t every interview feel like this? As I mentioned earlier, I watch A LOT of press interviews, and Sean is one of the few interviewers that hold this talent.

“You are so well-spoken, I enjoy conversations with you very much.”

liza koshy, S10E04

Along with his natural personality, Sean genuinely cares about the full scope of his guests’ backgrounds, careers, and industries. The genuineness of Sean’s interview questions regarding particular industries is notably seen in his interview with Halsey for Season 11 Episode 4. From discussing the in and outs of sound engineering on a track to the organization and structure of an album like Halsey’s Manic to the way a fan following can manipulate and control the success of the pop music industry, Sean structures his interview with Halsey like a conversation dissecting the pop music industry from the perspective of a globally successful pop artist. Sean has similarly done this with the rap industry (in interviews with Big Sean, Wale, E-40, and more), cooking television industry (in interviews with Gordon Ramsey and Alton Brown), pro wrestling industry (in interviews with Stone Cold Steve Austin, Sasha Banks and Chris Jericho), and more. Sean cares so much about the guests’ industries and careers that they notice and show their appreciation:

“[Sean’s] questions are good though. I do believe you care about the [rap] culture.”

Wale, S4E17

“You fuck with hip hop for real like you know what you’re talking about.”

big sean, S11E07

“How do you know about that? I love that you know about that.”

rhett from rhett and Link, S6E11

“Bro, I’m fucking impressed by these questions. Thank you, man. Sometimes you do interviews and motherfuckers don’t really take the time…”

logic, S4E21

“Nobody told me we were going to go deep on this show…I’m grateful.”

nick offerman, S10E07

“Sean…you are a gentle man. That’s very sweet you’ve done all this research. That’s very kind of you. Most people don’t do this deep dive.”

pete holmes, S7E10

With this being said, Sean Evans is by far the most underrated, talented, and entertaining press interviewers/hosts in the business right now and has ultimately made First We Feasts’ Hot Ones the popular show that it is today.

The Show’s Editor: Colin Higgins

While Sean Evans is the man behind the interview, Colin Higgins is the man behind the video. In the same way that Sean can highlight a celebrity’s personality through interview questions, Colin subtly highlights their personality through different video edits. From habits in their body language to their vocal inflections to noteworthy quotes, Colin has this extremely subtle, yet crazy way of making each edit fit the particular celebrity moment.

Though the edits are crazy entertaining, Colin never overdoes it. As someone who watches a lot of YouTube, I know there are a lot of editors who simply try too hard with their edits. They either over-edit in terms of quantity or quality. On the other hand, Colin keeps it simple, yet extremely effective. He edits at the perfect candid moments with the perfect choices of echoes, sound effects, visual effects, and close camera cuts. Colin’s edits for the Idris Elba episode in Season 9 and Paul Rudd episode in Season 10 can be found all across Twitter and Facebook reaching further than just the Hot Ones community. Here are some of my favorites:

Tweet via @ObeezyLive

For Paul Rudd’s candid moment, Colin easily could’ve overdone the edit. Paul is an extremely lovable and candid guy, naturally. In this case, Colin made the intelligent choice to keep the natural edit to match the guest using a simple transition into a close-cut with happily simple-sounding music. Therefore, the guest is able to shine without needing an edit. Candid guest paired with a candid edit…great work Colin.

During this coronavirus epidemic, this one really fits.

For me, this one takes the bag.

Thank you, Colin Higgins. You rock and you’re appreciated.

“Damn, your editors are good…also Colin, you’re great.”

Liza koshy, S10E04

“Shoutout Colin Evans, he doesn’t get enough love.”

sean evans, S10E04

Immaculate Success

With Sean Evans at the forefront and Colin Higgins behind the scenes, First We Feasts’ Hot Ones has gained immaculate success on YouTube, so much so that it earned a Shorty Award for Best Web Series in 2018. The show’s latest video (as of 03/23/20) from Season 11 featuring Big Sean has rendered over 2 million views in just 4 days. In Big Sean‘s interview, he was so impressed with the web series’ concept, the show’s success, and the host Sean Evans that even asked if Hot Ones took investors insinuating that he was interested in becoming directly involved in the show’s production.

Tweet via @firstwefeast

But Big Sean’s episode viewings only scratch the surface of the show’s success. It’s most popular episode is from Season 8 featuring Gordon Ramsey which has earned a staggering 52 million views and counting. Watch below as Sean flawlessly handles the heat of the wings and the heat of Gordon Ramsey’s wrath:

Video via YouTube.

Hot Ones has proven so popular on YouTube that it has been featured on network television. In 2019, Sean Evans and Hot Ones made 3 appearances on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon challenging Jimmy, Selena Gomez, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and JJ Watt to conquer the hot questions and hotter wings.

Ultimately, the reason for Hot Ones‘ immaculate success is because of the spectacular guest variety, Sean Evan’s superb talent serving as the epitome of interviewing, and the impressive editing work performed by Colin Higgins.

I think Andy Devine summed it up pretty well:

“No wonder this show’s a hit.”

adam devine, S9E06
